Good or crap cell/mobile service. How much of this depends on the provider or the phone? I have verizon and lately my reseption has been crap! If I had a different phone, could it be better? Dunno, I'm definitely looking at different companies. Sheesh, what's better, gsm or CDMA? What do you all have to say...smile!
well, i have a verizon phone, and the reception is very good. if your reception is bad, update your roaming capabilities. to do this dial *228 and press option 2.
do not press option 1 because that is to program your phone. Warning! warning! warning! warning!if you do that when the battery is very lo to the point where it automatically shuts off, it will damage your phone.
if you want to program your phone by any chance, make sure your phone is fully charged and if the battery is low, then connect it to your electrical outlet at home.
I have had very good reception with verizon so think I will stay with them for a while.

I have had Verizon for over a year now, and my reception is great. Haven't had problems. I'm definitely staying with verizon.
Hmm, it's a combination of both service and phone. Sometimes just bringing in the phone and getting the latest software update on it can help, just bring it to the local store. With Cingular I don't have big complaints, lost connection twice so far, once in the mountains in a revine and once in the middle of nowhere, south carolina ;) but only for a very short period of time.
cheers

I have t-Mobile, and they have very good service. I might switch to cingular, because they provide a couple of services that i would like to have. First, they have a service that lets you dial a number, put your phone up to a speaker, and it'll record it. Then, it'll send you a text message back telling you the name of the song. The other one is #121, which is kind of like TellMe, but it can schedule wake-up-calls, and has a voice dialing feature.
I started out with AT&T Wireless which went kaputt and merged with Cingular, so I've technically been with Cingular I guess. They've been OK. The calls are only clear when I'm in town. I live in a rural area, so reception around my house is iffy and in my house, it's almost nill, though I've found candy bar style phones with internal antennas work better than flip phones or phones with external antennas. Everyone in town here says the family should switch to Verizon, but we're under Cingular's contract until October, so we'll see after that.
Well, like I said before, I have had Verizon for over a year now, and I haven't had problems. My reception is great. I also use a flip phone, and I haven't had any problems with it. I actually like it a lot better than my old candy bar style phone I used to have with a different cell phone company. I always seemed to have trouble with that phone.
Gotta weigh in on this one for sure! First, the warning about connecting your phone to power or being sure you have a fully charged battery is one that should be Heeded! Should the battery die durring an update or any type of programming disaster could definately be the result. The star 225 I believe updates the PRL(prefered roaming list) which basicly tells the phone where to roam and where not to and which towers to use. updateing this can certainly help. As far as what causes bad service pones, towers, companies in my opinion it could be all of the above. Every service has bad phones and good phones but sadly the carriers won't admit to this. I've heard certain models of lg that sound great and others that are very gargled. Some samsungs get great reception and others don't. I would say if you are haveing reception problems definately go back to the store and consider trying another brand of phone or a different model of the same brand. I am a motorola man myself and have found them to be excellent. Also, the newest phones with internal antenas work well. Motorola had big problems with the internal antenna until the razer and now they are working well. i use an external antena on a v551 with cingular and it's excellent. And lastly! I prefer GSM phones. Nice thing about that is you can buy an unlocked phone and simply swap a sim card from your previous phone and all is well. I buy my phones from EBay so I don't have to contract. It's a little more expensive that way but I get the phone I want.
I've been a nextel user for several years, and haven't ever had too many problems out of them.
I've really only lost my service when we've gone through an area where there's no towers, or if we go over bridges, but that's about it. And since they've merged with Sprint and had more towers put up I've been able to get better service from them.
The only issue I have, is that the brand of phones they use can't support talks, and the software they do have that makes one of their models talk doesn't do much.
does Cingular have an option like Verizon where you dial like star 228 and it updates the service towers? or reception I mean? thanks just curious because if so I'd like to know how to do it, and no i don't have talx or mobile speak, don't get me started onthat so called, helpful stuff.
Hmmm, doe you have... Okay, just had to do that. sory... Regarding Cingular updating towers. This is done automaticly and nothinkg has to be dialed.
